In the February 1981 issue of Omni magazine, an article entitled ‘Space Activism’ was accompanied by a directory of space interest groups, whose activities ranged from lobbying, raising public awareness, and theoretical work, to being directly involved in space exploration.
Over three decades later, many of those groups are now online, and I’ve updated that original list with links to organizations’ sites. Several that were in the Omni directory were deleted from this update, either because they no longer exist, don’t have a web presence, or their mission and focus have changed over the years. Some groups that didn’t exist at the time were added because they have a similar vision and mission.
This link list, as with the original list, is by no means exhaustive, but serves as a launchpad for finding your home in space activism:
Citizen-Supported Groups
AMSAI Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation
British Interplanetary Society
Chicago Society for Space Studies (formerly the Chicago Society for Space Settlement)
Citizens for Space Exploration
National Space Society (was the L5 Society)
Organization for the Advancement of Space Industrialization and Settlement (OASiS)
Trade Groups
Aerospace Industries Association
American Astronautical Society
American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
Coalition for Space Exploration
Universities Space Research Association
Other Space-Sympathetic Groups
International Planetarium Society, Inc.
